Spirit of Legacy

Greetings from the Southwest Park and Recreation Training Institute!

Most of us think of 65 as the age to retire or slow down. But with the SWPRTI I believe that a lot of us, and especially the Institute are just getting started at 65.

Since attending my first Institute in 1993 I’ve seen it grow, shrink, turn 50, move to a new location and once again begin to grow. I often tell friends, colleagues and professionals in other fields that the SWPRTI is the best conference I’ve ever experienced. It delivers top-notch opportunities for attendees in a setting that encourages learning, networking and a spirit of legacy that is unmatched. If that isn’t enough it is a terrific value dollar-wise. It focuses on the individual in most instances, but with the ‘big picture’ in mind. It is a ‘by the people for the people’ way of teaching and learning. It is something you can use and take back to work and show others who in turn use it too.

In this day and age of change, the SWPRTI is finding new ways of doing things, like adapting to social media and incorporating new ways to teach and present during the annual conference. The Parks, Cities, Counties and other entities we all represent benefit from the legacy learning afforded each year. Broadening our ‘spirit of legacy’ is the PPMA (Parks Planning Maintenance Academy), which is now in its third year. Over 135 attendees have gone through the Academy with many now in their third year of attending and another 111 registered for 2019! Thanks to SWPRTI Executive Sally Rodriguez and PPMA Superintendent Mendy Putman, along with our fantastic Board of Directors, Officers, EBOR (Educational Board of Regents) and President Mike Amond make so much happen.

One organization, two yearly conferences and unlimited opportunities… That is the Southwest Park and Recreation Training Institute. I hope you will consider making SWPRTI part of your learning experience and become a part of our legacy.

"Thank you for all your work. Once again the Institute was a highlight! "

Lowell Caneday, Ph.D.

"What an honor to be selected as a speaker for the 63rd Annual Southwest Parks and Recreation Training Institute.  This great group of professionals came together from all agency levels and divisions across the country for continuing education.  The institute offers a unique opportunity for Parks and Recreation Professionals to gain national insight from real-time projects and programs."

– Kevin Eatherly, 2018 Speaker

“Again, thank you for not only the blessing of tuition assistance, networking, and insightful professional development learning, but also for the warm reception and welcome that I enjoyed from all your friendly and hospitable members and speakers. If I am in Africa this time next year, I will surely be missing and wishing for the opportunity to be with y'all again.”

- Karl Noren, 2018 Scholarship Recipient

"All of my staff that attended said it was a great experience so you and the Board are to be congratulated. We plan to try and have more at the 64th and I think OKC will be sending at least one person to your new Maintenance school over in Colorado."

- Douglas Kupper, OKC
